Amboseli National Park

Back to Kenya

Beneath the snows of Kilimanjaro — just across the Tanzanian border — Amboseli’s marshes and dust pans host the most photographed elephants on earth: great tuskers wading through green swamps with Africa’s highest mountain filling the sky behind them.

Highlights

Amboseli’s elephant research project is the world’s longest-running, and its families are wonderfully relaxed around vehicles — expect intimate encounters with some of the last great tuskers in Africa. The park’s wetlands draw over 400 bird species, and observation hill gives the classic mountain-and-marsh panorama.

Best Time to Visit

June to October and January to February offer the driest game viewing and the best odds of a cloud-free Kilimanjaro at dawn and dusk. After the rains, the light turns the whole park luminous.

Where to Stay

Small luxury camps on the park’s quiet fringes and neighbouring Maasai conservancies put the mountain on your private veranda — we choose for the view.
