TALK TO A SAFARI EXPERTThe dry season from June to October offers the most reliable game viewing, with animals gathering around water sources and the Great Migration in full swing in the northern Serengeti. January to March is superb for the calving season in the south, while April and May bring lush green landscapes, lower rates and far fewer vehicles.
The herds move year-round in a clockwise circuit. From December to March they mass on the Ndutu short-grass plains for calving; June and July bring the dramatic Grumeti River crossings in the west; and from July to October they brave the crocodile-filled Mara River in the northern Serengeti. We position your camps around the herds for whichever month you travel.
Expect from roughly $800 to $2,500 per person per night at top lodges and camps, depending on season and exclusivity. A typical seven-day private luxury safari — including light-aircraft flights, park fees and full board — runs from about $11,000 to $17,000 per person. Honeymoon and Zanzibar combinations sit slightly higher.
Yes — Tanzania is one of Africa's most stable and welcoming countries, and the safari circuit is exceptionally well run. You are accompanied by professional guides throughout, transfers are seamless, and lodges maintain superb safety standards. As anywhere, normal travel precautions apply in larger cities such as Dar es Salaam.
Most nationalities require a tourist visa ($50–$100), easily obtained in advance through Tanzania's official eVisa portal. A yellow fever certificate is only required if you arrive from an endemic country. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all safari areas, and we suggest a travel-clinic check-up six to eight weeks before departure.
For a luxury itinerary we recommend light-aircraft flights — scheduled and private charters connect the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Ruaha and Zanzibar daily, turning long dusty drives into scenic 45-minute hops. The classic northern circuit can also be done by private 4x4 with your own guide if you prefer to watch the landscape change at ground level.
Beautifully — it is the signature Tanzania journey. Daily flights link the Serengeti's airstrips with Zanzibar in under two hours, so you can move from a dawn game drive to a sunset dhow cruise on the same day. Three to four nights on the island is the ideal finish to a week on safari.
Very much so. Many top lodges welcome families with private vehicles, dedicated guides and flexible mealtimes, and several offer superb kids' programmes. Some intimate camps set minimum ages of six to twelve years, so tell us who is travelling and we will match the right camps to your family.
