Come face to face with mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, then track chimpanzees through the ancient canopy of Nyungwe Forest.
A privileged hour with the gorillas, a golden-monkey morning in the bamboo, and nights in the Virungas' celebrated lodges — all four days from Kigali.
Rwanda beyond the gorillas — Big Five drives through a conservation fairy-tale, then barefoot evenings on the shores of Lake Kivu.
The ultimate East African odyssey — the Masai Mara, the Serengeti and a finale among the mountain gorillas of the Virungas.
Thirty years ago no one would have predicted it: today Rwanda is Africa's safest, cleanest, most gracefully run destination — a conservation powerhouse where luxury and purpose travel hand in hand. Here is why we believe it belongs at the very top of your list.
Start PlanningTwelve habituated families, ninety-six permits a day, three hours from the international airport — nowhere on earth makes meeting mountain gorillas this intimate, or this seamless.
Akagera was poached to silence; today lions roar there again and black rhinos browse the acacia — a Big Five park rebuilt in a single generation, and you fund it by visiting.
Gorillas before lunch, a lake by sunset — Rwanda is the size of a long weekend, with smooth roads and helicopter transfers collapsing every distance.
One of Africa's oldest rainforests — chimpanzees at dawn, colobus troops three hundred strong and a canopy walkway sixty metres above the orchids.
Bisate's woven nests, Singita's volcanic-stone suites, One&Only's forest spa — Rwanda's lodge scene is the most celebrated in Africa, full stop.
Gorilla days begin with coffee by the fire and a briefing at Kinigi — then the bamboo closes around you and every sense comes alive.
Trackers who know every silverback by name, guides who read the forest like a book — decades of wisdom turn each trek into your private masterclass.
Copper baths facing volcano summits, fireplaces lit before you ask, beds you will dream about for years — wilderness without a whisper of hardship.
Akagera's lions and rhinos, golden monkeys in the bamboo, shoebills in the papyrus — Rwanda rewards every day you give it.
A gin and tonic as the mist pours off the volcanoes, dinner under lanterns, and a night sky no city has ever dimmed.
Smooth roads, short distances and helicopter options — we meet you at every door, handle the luggage and keep the champagne cold.

East Africa's inland sea — clear, calm water between terraced hills, coffee farms and sandy coves. The exhale your journey deserves.
Africa's cleanest, safest capital — moving memorials, single-origin coffee and a creative scene worth a day of any itinerary.
We are Ancient Africa Safaris — a family of East African guides, planners and storytellers who have spent more than fifteen years crafting private journeys through the wild heart of this continent. From our home in Kampala we design every safari by hand: no templates, no crowds, just the Africa we grew up with, shared with you. Every trail we recommend, we have walked ourselves.
Karibu sana — welcome to the family.
Still unsure? Tell us what you love about travel — we'll tell you, honestly, whether Rwanda is your place.
TALK TO A SAFARI EXPERT$1,500 per person, which includes park entry and the expert trackers who locate your gorilla family. Only 96 permits are issued per day across all twelve habituated families, so we secure yours up to a year ahead for dry-season dates — a portion of every permit funds conservation and local communities.
The long dry season from June to September offers the firmest trails and clearest volcano views, and pairs perfectly with Akagera at its driest. December to February is a fine second window. The rainy seasons are mistier but wonderfully quiet — and the gorillas are there year-round.
Treks in Volcanoes National Park run from thirty minutes to four hours at 2,500–3,000 metres. Trails are steep in places but well managed; porters carry your pack, and we can request closer families for travellers who prefer a gentler morning.
Rwanda is consistently ranked among the safest countries in Africa — many guests call Kigali the cleanest, calmest capital they have ever visited. You travel with our professional guides throughout, and lodges maintain world-class standards.
Most nationalities receive a 30-day visa on arrival ($50), and citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and Francophonie countries enter visa-free. The $100 East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya together. Yellow fever certificates are needed only if arriving from an endemic country.
Gorillas alone can be done beautifully in three to four days thanks to short distances. The full Rwanda — Volcanoes, Nyungwe, Akagera and a Lake Kivu exhale — deserves seven to ten. It also combines seamlessly with the Masai Mara or Serengeti.
Rwanda is faster and more polished: trailheads sit three hours from the international airport amid the world's best gorilla lodges, with permits at $1,500. Uganda's treks ($800) are wilder and longer. Many of our guests simply do both — the East Africa Tourist Visa makes it easy.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is strictly 15. Younger travellers are welcome at Akagera — a wonderful family Big Five park — and on Lake Kivu, while the over-15s take on the volcanoes.
Tell us your dream — the silverback's gaze, the canopy walkway, the lake at dusk — and our experts will shape it into a journey that is yours alone. No obligation, no templates; just an honest conversation about extraordinary travel.
