Only 96 permits are issued per day across all twelve habituated families, so we secure yours up to a year ahead for dry-season dates — a portion of every permit funds conservation and local communities.
The long dry season from June to September offers the firmest trails and clearest volcano views, and pairs perfectly with Akagera at its driest. December to February is a fine second window. The rainy seasons are mistier but wonderfully quiet — and the gorillas are there year-round.
Treks in Volcanoes National Park run from thirty minutes to four hours at 2,500–3,000 metres. Trails are steep in places but well managed; porters carry your pack, and we can request closer families for travellers who prefer a gentler morning.
Rwanda is consistently ranked among the safest countries in Africa — many guests call Kigali the cleanest, calmest capital they have ever visited. You travel with our professional guides throughout, and lodges maintain world-class standards.
Most nationalities receive a 30-day visa on arrival ($50), and citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and Francophonie countries enter visa-free. The $100 East Africa Tourist Visa covers Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya together. Yellow fever certificates are needed only if arriving from an endemic country.
Gorillas alone can be done beautifully in three to four days thanks to short distances. The full Rwanda — Volcanoes, Nyungwe, Akagera and a Lake Kivu exhale — deserves seven to ten. It also combines seamlessly with the Masai Mara or Serengeti.
Rwanda is faster and more polished: trailheads sit three hours from the international airport amid the world's best gorilla lodges, with permits at $1,500. Uganda's treks ($800) are wilder and longer. Many of our guests simply do both — the East Africa Tourist Visa makes it easy.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is strictly 15. Younger travellers are welcome at Akagera — a wonderful family Big Five park — and on Lake Kivu, while the over-15s take on the volcanoes.
