Serengeti National Park

Back to Tanzania

The Serengeti is the safari against which all others are measured — nearly 15,000 square kilometres of golden grassland, granite kopjes and riverine forest holding the densest concentrations of large mammals on earth. This is the stage of the Great Wildebeest Migration and the home range of Africa’s most studied lion prides.

Highlights

The migration defines the calendar: two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle moving in a constant clockwise circuit, with dramatic river crossings on the Grumeti in June and July and the Mara from July to October. Beyond the herds, the Seronera Valley offers the most reliable leopard sightings in Africa, while cheetah hunt the open short-grass plains in the south.

Best Time to Visit

There is no bad month — the question is which spectacle you want. June to October brings the classic dry-season game viewing and the river crossings; December to March masses the herds in the south for calving. April and May are green, quiet and remarkably good value.

Where to Stay

We hand-pick camps that move with the seasons. For uncompromising luxury, Singita Sasakwa Lodge rules the western corridor, while the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti anchors the centre of the park year-round.
