Uganda’s largest and oldest park is split in two by the Victoria Nile — and at its heart, the entire river detonates through a seven-metre gap in the rift escarpment. Murchison Falls is the most powerful waterfall on earth, and the savannah around it teems with game.
Take the boat to the base of the falls, then hike to the top where the spray soaks you and the ground trembles. Game drives on the northern bank find elephant, lion, leopard and Uganda’s endemic Rothschild’s giraffe; the papyrus delta downstream is the most reliable place in Africa to meet the prehistoric shoebill stork.
December to February and June to September offer the driest game viewing, with wildlife drawn to the river. The park rewards visits year-round — the falls never take a day off.
Baker’s Lodge lines the Nile’s quiet southern bank, with boats departing from its own jetty.
