Day 2: Mountain gorilla trekking safari / community walk.

Ultimately, the most exciting of all is meeting the gentle gorillas of the mist. Take an early morning breakfast, and drive to the park office headquarters for a mini briefing given by the Park’s wardens. Carry with you some drinking water, a rain jacket, packed lunch, and jungle boots.

After the morning brief, the park warden allocates you to a gorilla family of not more than 8 trekkers. Apart from seeing Gorillas, you will see other animals. For example, bush pigs, antelopes, chimpanzees, monkeys, black and white colobus, baboons, forest elephants. The park is also home to over 360 bird species. The movement of the gorillas as you trek is such an adventure.

At last, when you meet the humble gentle giants, you have a maximum of one hour with them. Take some photos, but without use of flash light. Keep a minimum distance of 5 meters. In addition, avoid direct contact with the primates as you may spread diseases to them. Coming close to the Gorillas may mean crowding their space. The male gorillas “silverbacks” might not take this lightly. Therefore, this could lead to a mini chase around the forest. Do not run away in case this happens.

Gorilla trekking last between 2 to 8 hours, an activity worth the time and effort. Spend the afternoon on a cultural village walk. It is a rewarding opportunity seeing the natives of Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest. Through this initiative, may visitors find a way to give back and support these local communities. You may also visit the Batwa community. At the end of the day, return to the lodge, relax for dinner and overnight stay.
