The Pearl of
Africa

Where half the world's mountain gorillas roam ancient forests, and the Nile begins its 6,650 km journey to the sea.

1,063 Mountain gorillas
10 National parks
1,020 Bird species

“So magnificent that Churchill called it the Pearl of Africa — and it still deserves every word.”

Landlocked in the heart of East Africa, Uganda is a country of extraordinary contradictions: ancient rainforests and vast savannas, mist-shrouded volcanoes and shimmering lakes, one of Africa’s rarest primates and an astonishing 1,020 bird species — all within a country smaller than the United Kingdom. Uganda is home to roughly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, concentrated in the dense old-growth forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. For those who have stood face to face with a gorilla family in their natural habitat, Uganda needs no further introduction.
